Assessing Department

We are located in the Engineering Building with the Building Department and Water and Sewer Department.  The Assessing Department is responsible for accurately estimating fair market value of taxable properties within the community.  Every year the Assessing Department mails out the Notice of Assessment, Taxable Valuation, and Property Classification to owners of property within the Township.

Township Property Appraisers physically visit properties annually to take photos and outside measurements of structures and land improvements in order to verify/update  Township records.  This canvassing of property normally will occur between the months of May-October.  The Township Appraisers work in teams of two, drive a Township vehicle and have proper identification.  They report to the Assessing Department.  This canvassing of property is required by the State Tax Commission; the STC performs annual audits of local units of government to ensure the units compliance with this requirement.  The Appraisers do not need to enter your home, but it is helpful if they can enter the rear yard for accuracy of measurements and discovery.  If they are not able to access your property or are denied access to your property the Appraisers will leave and estimate what they believe the current status of the property is.  Please feel free to contact The Assessing Dept at 466-1410 if you have any questions or concerns regarding this canvassing.

The Assessing Department is also responsible for:

Maintaining property record information for every parcel of property in Harrison Township including legal description of the land and physical improvements to the land such as commercial, industrial and residential buildings, including condominiums and accessory structures.

Maintaining taxpayer of record information, received in various formats, such as Deeds, Property Transfer Affidavits, Homeowner’s Principal Residence Exemption Affidavits and other related forms.

Maintaining sales records, on vacant and improved properties, obtained through recorded deeds received from Macomb County Clerk’s Office and/or Property Transfer Affidavits.
